2018 Rule Change Webinars

Message from the EvLL UIC

To all Everett Little League, players, parents and volunteers, welcome to the beginning of the 2018 Little League Season. It is with the utmost honor to have been selected as your Umpire-in-Chief for the upcoming season. As with every year I look forward to a great season.

Background:

This will be the beginning of my ninth season as a Little League Umpire. I began with North Everett Little League and have continued throughout the merger. I have done both baseball (Minors, Majors, Intermediate, Juniors and Senior) and Softball (Minors, Majors, and Juniors). In 2016, I attended the week long Umpire Training Academy in San Bernardino, CA.

Additionally, I was honored to have been selected to travel to Tucson, AZ for the Regional Softball Little League World Series. I can say with enthusiasm, that both experiences were both gratifying and humbling at the same time.

The weekend of December 8, 2017, I attended a seminar at the Western Region Headquarters for UIC training, "Train the Trainer" and the information presented was very informative and I will be using some of the ideas for this upcoming season and going forward.

Training:

Winter Training begins on January 14th and there will be two other sessions on January 21st and January 28th. These sessions will begin at 6 pm following the winter training session at Engineered Sports. The sessions will last approximately 1 hour. Each session will cover basic mechanics including base umpires and plate umpire mechanics.

I would encourage any parent who last season (especially in the Minors Division) who was asked to step in to be the plate/field umpire for a game to attend the umpire training. Additionally, I invite any parent or coach who believes that umpiring might be for you to attend some of these sessions. Training will consist of the very basics mechanics, including footwork, game management, also a Q&A of some of the basic rules. I will provide a face mask and an Indicator, just for practice in order to manipulate these items during game situations.

Something new for this year derived from the UIC seminar in December was to create a way for managers, coaches, umpires and any league volunteers who wanted to know the rules of Little League. It is difficult to get everyone together for a Rules Clinic and with this in mind we have created a series of "Rules Webinars." Each Webinar covers a rule or regulation from the Little League Rule Book. Each Webinar is self paced, as they are a PowerPoint presentation. Each webinar does have some narration that I have included on rules or regulations that need clarification. I hope all managers, coaches and umpires will take advantage of the Webinars preparing for the upcoming season.

However, please pay attention to the EVLL web site, as I will update the any rule changes as they become available on the web site.

Again, I encourage any parent, male or female, to become part of a great aspect of Little League.

Hope to see and meet many of you in the future.

Respectfully,

Timothy Neal
